Information & System Requirements

In this article, you will find system requirements for using Amira.

After verifying your devices meet our minimum requirements, please review information about Hardware: Computers, Network and Headsets. Please also complete the IT Readiness Checklist and schedule a Go Live Check with Amira Support at support@amiralearning.com.

Technology Platform

  • Amira is built using Internet and industry-standard technology in order to provide capacity for high levels of concurrent usage and reliability. It uses standard Internet components that simplify setup and optimize issues surrounding student access to servers. Clients run in standard web browsers and connect to servers over HTTP or HTTPS.
  • Amira requires a persistent connection to an AWS Data Center. The servers required to deliver Amira functionality are managed virtually within the AWS environment and scale elastically.
  • Amira uses browser-based clients. The District, School or Home utilizing Amira must have reasonable bandwidth to enable the bidirectional exchange of data necessary for Amira to operate.

The recommended system requirements outlined in the following sections are based on experience and testing.   Non-conforming implementations may work but will not be supported.

Device Requirements

Amira runs on student and teacher workstations that meet the following requirements:

  • Browser: Microsoft Edge version 16 or later; Safari 11.1 or later (Safari is the only supported browser on iPad); Chrome 60 or later; Firefox 60 or later. Browsers must support HTML5. Cookies must be enabled on all browsers.
  • Operating System: Macintosh OS X 10.10.x through 10.13.x; Windows 7 Professional, Windows 8.x through 10.x; Chrome OS version 59 or later; iOS 17 or later; iPad iOS 12 (minimum) or later (recommended); must use Safari browser on an iPad.
  • Memory: 4 GB of RAM, based on OS version
  • Network: Network Interface Cards supporting TCP/IP (wireless networks, including 802.11a, 802.11g, or 802.11n, are supported, but performance may be limited by the network’s bandwidth capacity)
  • Screen: Minimum of 7” form factor
  • Tablets: The only tablets that Amira supports are iPads with iOS 12 or greater, for our student experience. We recommend iOS13. Amira's "teacher app" (reporting) doesn't yet support iPad.
  • Plug-ins: None
  • Other: Using a headset with microphone is important when doing Assessment. For iPads, we recommend a headset with a 3.5 mm connection since USB connections are not compatible with iOS. If the 3.5mm headset needs an adapter, we strongly recommend an Apple brand lightning adapter or USB-C adapter.

Amira supports a wide range of client workstations running many different processors and operating systems. As a general rule, any workstation or laptop purchased in the last four years should be capable of running Amira.

Non-Supported Hardware

  • Thin Client workstations, including nComputing, are not supported
  • Districts using older workstations with Intel Atom processors (or equivalent) should consider that these workstations, laptops, or netbooks may not be suitable for running Amira.
